Hasan Ali's spirited display helped Dambulla Aura register a nine-run victory over Jaffna Kings in Match 11 of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023 at Pallekelle on Monday (August 7). Shoaib Malik nearly pulled off a miraculous chase for Kings, but he was denied enough support at the other end. Kings have now lost three games, while Aura has won three and risen to the top of the standings.

Thisara Perera and Co. needed only 135 to get over the line, but they faltered early on, losing four wickets inside the powerplay. The star of the night, Hasan, dismissed both openers - Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Charith Asalanka - while Binura Fernando removed Towhid Hridoy to demolish the top order. Hayden Kerr then sent back South African hitterย David Miller, putting Kings in even greater jeopardy.

Malik and Dunith Wellalage stitched a decent partnership to help the team recover, but it wasn't enough as Pakistan speedster Hasan took his third wicket of the night by dismissing the Lankan all-rounder in the 13th over. Kings suffered another collapse, but Malik never worried about it, all guns blazing at one end.

Malik's all-round heroics went in vain

The veteran Pakistani all-rounder was the lone warrior for Kings as he made 74* off 53 balls including 5 fours & 6 sixes. With a little more support from any of the other batters, the Kings would have crossed the finish line with ease. Hasan was adjudged Player of the Match for his figures of 4-0-20-3. Fernando's 4-over spell was also impressive where he conceded just 8 runs and picked a wicket.

Earlier, Aura, who was asked to bat first, also had a disastrous start as they lost both their openers in the very first over. However, Sadeera Samarawickrama and Kusal Perera put on a 50-plus partnership to get the team back on track. Malik also excelled with the ball, taking two wickets of dangerous Perera and Dhananjaya de Silva. Aura then lost a couple of more wickets, but Hayden Kerr's 25 off 20 balls helped them reach 134-8 in 20 overs.
