As per reports, the Punjab franchise is set to remove Mayank Agarwal as captain for the next season of the Indian T20 League. The Indian batter was appointed as captain last season only. However, a disappointing performance from the team has led to them considering a change in captaincy and head coach position.
Agarwal, however, will be staying in the team as a player. The Indian batter didn't have a fruitful season with the bat in the last edition of the cash-rich league as he could only manage 196 runs in 13 games. His form with the bat was so bad that he had to demote himself in the batting order and promote Jonny Bairstow to the top order. If sources are to be believed, Jonny Bairstow is likely to lead the franchise in the upcoming season. Meanwhile, a source close to the team has said that Mayank will need to focus on his batting.
“No Mayank is not in plans to lead. He will need to focus on batting. He will be a crucial player for us. As for Anil, we are discussing a few options but nothing has materialized yet. We have time left. We will take a call at the right time,” said a source close to the team.
Eoin Morgan or Trevor Bayliss might replace Anil Kumble as the head coach: Reports
It has also been understood Anil Kumble, who became the head coach of the 2014 finalists in September 2019, might be replaced by Morgan or Bayliss ahead of the upcoming season. The team official has said that the Mohali-based team has decided not to renew the contract of the former India Test skipper.
“The Mohali team has apparently decided not to renew Anil Kumble’s three-year contract, which ends this September. They are already in search of candidates.”
“It is learnt that their representatives have approached the likes of Eoin Morgan, Trevor Bayliss and one former India coach. Eventually one of them or none of them may get the posting”, a Punjab Kings official reported
