On his 50th birthday, the Sharjah Cricket Stadium dedicated a stand to the legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar. The United Arab Emirates venue staged a ceremony on Monday to honour the former Indian batting maestro and declared that the "West Stand" will now be known as the "Sachin Tendulkar Stand."
Tendulkar scored 143 runs versus Australia in a One-Day International at the venue in April 1998 that was dubbed "Desert Storm" when play was stopped for 25 minutes by a sandstorm. India won the tri-series final versus Australia by six wickets, thanks to Tendulkar's innings, which included 134 runs while celebrating his 25th birthday.
Which other cricket stadium has honoured the batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar?
On Monday, the iconic gates at the Sydney Cricket Ground were revealed with the names Sachin Tendulkar along with Brian Lara. They are being recognised at the illustrious SCG with icons including Donald Bradman, Alan Davidson, and Arthur Morris, all from New South Wales (and Australia).
The gates were unveiled on April 24 to commemorate Tendulkar's 50th birthday and the 30th anniversary of Lara's 277 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which was his first Test century in the match that took place in January 1993. While Tendulkar averaged 157 at the SCG, accumulating 785 runs throughout five Tests across the years including three centuries, Lara's 277-run innings remains his best at the venue (he scored 384 runs altogether there in four Tests).
The gates were unveiled by Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley, SCG and Venues NSW Chairman Rod McGeoch AO, and CEO Kerrie Mather. Mather spoke about how the two greats have fared at the Sydney Cricket Ground during their time in Tests. He said, “Sachin Tendulkar's record at the SCG is simply remarkable, while Brian Lara's maiden Test century remains one of the most celebrated innings by a visiting player. Both players continue to hold a deep affection for the SCG and they remain hugely popular whenever they visit Sydney."
