Ever since Virat Kohli decided to step down from the position of the Test captain, speculations about the new captain have grown. However, according to a recent report, BCCI is not thinking of anyone else apart from Rohit Sharma to be the new captain of the Indian Test side.

Kohli stepped down from the position of the T20I captain after the 20-20 World Cup 2021 post which Rohit was appointed the captain. The selectors decided to remove Kohli from the ODI captaincy position and Rohit was given that responsibility as well.

A BCCI official confirmed to InsideSport that Rohit will be the new captain of the Test side.

“Without any doubt, Rohit Sharma will be the new test captain of India. Rohit was named vice-captain before the South Africa series & will now be elevated as captain of the team. The announcement will be made soon”, a BCCI official was quoted saying by InsideSport.

Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah are in the race to be the new vice-captain of the team. Rahul was appointed the vice-captain of the Test series against South Africa after Rohit was ruled out due to an injury.

Rahul made his Test captaincy debut during the second Test against South Africa. Meanwhile, Bumrah is the vice-captain of the Indian team for the ODI series against South Africa. He does not have a lot of leadership experience but can be groomed for the future.  Pant has the experience of leading Delhi in the Indian T20 League thus it will be a tough call for the selection committee.

“The Vice-Captain will be India’s future leader. KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah all are future leaders. The selectors need to groom them in a proper structured manner. Selectors need to make a big choice on who will be made the vice-captain of the Indian test team”, the BCCI official further said.
