Breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record of 100 centuries has always been a hot topic of discussion over the years. Former India skipper Virat Kohli is the only contender at this stage who looks like he can break the record. From making his debut in 2008 to November 2019, the right-hander already had 70 hundreds to his name. It seems as if he would break the record very easily in the next few years.
However, the 3-year-old has to wait for almost three years for his 71st. Meanwhile, former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting feels that even though Kohli didn't score a hundred for almost three years, the latter can still break the record. The two-time World Cup-winning skipper for Australia added that he would dare say that Kohli can't break the record.
"If you would have asked me three years ago, I'd have said yes. But the fact that it has slowed down as much as it did... yeah, I still think that it is possible for him, there's no doubt," Ponting said on World Cricket Governing's show.
"Look, I'll never say never with Virat, because you know once he gets on a bit of a roll, you know how hungry he is and how keen for success he is. I'll never say never that's for sure," the two-time Aussie World Cup winning skipper said.
Virat Kohli has still a number of years ahead of him: Ricky Ponting
The 47-year-old further added that 30 international hundreds are a lot but Virat still has a lot of years ahead of him. Ponting also said that a few odd centuries combined by quite a few Test and ODI hundreds will do for Virat if he wants to reach the 100-centuries mark.
"I still think he has got a number of years ahead of him, but I guess to still be 30 international hundreds behind, that's a lot.
"That's five or six Test hundreds a year, maybe for the next three or four years. If you throw a couple of one-day ones, maybe the odd T20 ones on top of it," the 47-year-old added.
