India's all-format captain Rohit Sharma will reportedly be taking a break from the game. Thus, he is likely to skip the upcoming T20I series against South Africa. The Proteas team is set to tour India for a five-match T20 series starting on the 9th of June. Earlier reports had suggested that a few senior members of the team might be given a rest to be ready for the tour to England.

However, it has been understood that the selectors want some of the senior players to be present in the team. This is because South Africa have named a full-strength squad for the tour. However, the "Hitman" has opted out of the series after a hectic time during the Indian T20 League 2022.

"Yes, Rohit asked for a break and it’s understandable. He played all the games for Mumbai Indians and it takes a toll especially when the team doesn’t do well. We understand that. We want him fresh for the England tour," a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Meanwhile, Rohit did not have the best season in the cash-rich league this time around. In 14 appearances for the five-time champions, he scored 268 runs at an average of just 19.14. This was the first season that he did not score a half-century. In addition, Mumbai also ended their campaign at the bottom of the points table. They could only manage four wins in 14 games this season.

However, Rohit's current form doesn't seem to be a major concern for the team. "I don’t think it’s a concern. He has been playing well. A few days of rest and he should be good to go for the England tour," the senior BCCI official added. Thus, it will be exciting to watch Sharma play during India's tour to England.

The selection committee will meet virtually for a final call on the squad selection. South Africa have already announced their 16-man squad for the series. The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi will host the first match on the 9th of June.
