Veteran Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has been given a rest for India's upcoming tour of the West Indies. Kohli has been out of form for a long time, and his decision to rest in the series against the Windies has raised many eyebrows. During the series, India is scheduled to play three ODIs and five T20Is, which may have provided an opportunity for him to restore his lost form.
Many former cricketers and experts have raised questions about the former Indian captain taking a rest. Former Indian bowler RP Singh is the latest to join the list. He claims that while he played for India, no one ever asked him or his teammates whether they needed to rest. He explained that you were either selected or dropped.
"When a player is going through a bad patch, he won't ask for rest. He should play more games as taking a rest won't help him return to form. The graph has gone down and will be up again only when you play regular matches. The luxury of taking a rest isn't available to every player. When Pragyan (Ojha) and I were a part of the Indian team, there was no such thing as rest. No one asked if we wanted to rest... you either got selected or dropped," he told Cricbuzz.
Singh went on to remark that players have a limited time in their careers and should make use of it. He went on to say that Virat's decision to rest is only justifiable if he is injured. "Even senior players didn't take rest before the T20 World Cup 2007, and that was because the format was new. A cricketer's playing days are limited, and he eventually has to retire. Only if Virat has a niggle, then it's the right decision," he added.
Other senior players, including Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal, have also been rested for the tour. India's tour of the West Indies begins on the 22nd of July.
