In what comes as big news, Sania Mirza is all set to retire after the ongoing season. The Tennis star recently said that the 2022 season is going to be the last one of her career. She said this while addressing the media after her women’s doubles exit at the ongoing Australian Open.
Although Mirza said that she could still go deep into the tournament, she felt that her body couldn't take the load of playing another season after 2022. The 35-year-old also stated that she might not be able to even finish this season.
“I’ve decided this will be my last season. I’m taking it week by week, not sure if I can last the season, but I want too. Still feel I can play well, go deep into tournaments and all that. But beyond this season I don’t see my body do it either. It’s beat,” said Sania Mirza, as quoted by the Times Of India.
"There's a bunch reasons for it. It's not as simple as 'okay I'm not going to play'. I do feel my recovery is taking longer, I do feel, considering my son is three years old, I'm putting him at risk by travelling so much with him, that's something I have to take into account," added the Tennis star.
However, the right-hander and her Ukrainian partner Nadiia Kichenok lost in the women’s doubles event of the season-opening Grand Slam of 2022. Kaja Juvan and Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia got the better of Mirza and Kichenok, as they won in straight sets 6-4, 7-6. Nevertheless, Mirza and Rohan Bopanna will be participating in the upcoming mixed doubles event.
The Indian has inspired an entire generation as she has several achievements to her name. In the doubles category, Sania has won the Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open, also winning the Australian Open and US Open in the mixed doubles category.
