On this date in 2014, India won the famous Test against England at the home of cricket. It was India’s first win against England at the venue after 28 years since 1986. Under the captaincy of MS Dhoni India won the famous Test at Lord’s, which is regarded as one of the finest Test victories in the history of Indian cricket.

Chasing 319, England faced the best spell of Ishant Sharma’s career. At 71/2, England was doing a decent job in the run chase. Sharma bowled a beauty of an in-seamer to hit the top of the off stump to dismiss Ian Bell. Soon, Ishant induced an edge out of Alastair Cook and ended the resilience of the English captain. Within 15 deliveries, Ishant had produced magic.

The task was not done yet. From 72/4, England was going well in the run chase, thanks to the pair of Joe Root and Moeen Ali. At 173/4, England looked like favorites. India needed to think something out of the box. MS Dhoni asked Ishant to bowl shorter deliveries to the batters. The ploy worked well.

Execution of short ball ploy

MS Dhoni had Cheteshwar Pujara stationed at the short leg. Sharma executed the short ball. Moeen Ali ducked the ball, as Pujara caught the ball. The 101-run partnership was broken. Sharma continued the short ball ploy. The tall pacer went around the wicket and bowled short to Matt Prior. The batter tried to pull it over the mid-wicket region but could not make enough contact and offered his wicket.

Sharma went over the wicket to Ben Stokes and delivered a short delivery. Stokes tried to pull it but failed and lost his wicket. Amidst the chaos, Joe Root stood as the wall between India and victory. Sharma went round the wicket and bowled a short delivery, similar to the one he bowled to Prior. Root pulled it straight to the fielder. Stuart Broad was the last batter to be dismissed, for the short ball, as India claimed a 95-runs victory.
