Star Australian batter and former skipper Steve Smith failed to live up to the expectations in the first of the five-match Ashes series against England. The England skipper Ben Stokes made Smith play on the backfoot and the latter eventually got trapped in LBW and got dismissed only on the individual score of 16 runs; although he reviewed the decision of the on-field umpire considering height as a probable issue in this.

But eventually, he had to go as ball-tracking showed the ball hitting the top of the stumps which drove the English players into a celebration including the skipper Ben Stokes himself.

Just after Smith’s dismissal, cricket fans also came up with a lot of reactions and responses on the micro-blogging site Twitter for Steve Smith. Some of the fans also felt that it is quite strange to see the best batter failing on the track which was initially dubbed as the flat wicket in the Edgbaston of Birmingham.

Here’s how fans reacted:

Speaking of the ongoing action of the match, the visitors have posted 78 runs for the loss of three wickets at the time of lunch on the second day of the first Test. At the time of filling this copy, Usman Khawaja was unbeaten on the individual score of 40 runs with six boundaries to his name.  Number five batter Cameron Green is yet to arrive for batting in the middle after Smith’s dismissal as the game will resume after the lunch break.

Earlier, the hosts England amazed everyone by declaring their first innings on the score of 393 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 78 overs. Former skipper and batting great, Joe Root smashed a crucial century scoring 118 runs with seven boundaries and four sixes on his credit.

Other than Root, wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow and the opener Zak Crawley also contributed with individual scores of 78 and 61 runs respectively.

Nathan Lyon scalped four wickets for Australia alongside two wickets claimed by Josh Hazlewood and one wicket each claimed by Scott Boland and Cameron Green in the first innings.
