Ben Stokes's sudden retirement news sent all of Twitter into a frenzy. Having watched him play yesterday, fans could not believe the news at first. However, the dread of reality sunk in and everyone had to come to terms with it.

All of the cricketing fraternity came out to celebrate and honour the player who took the England team to their first ever World Cup win. Twitter was awash with fans and other players coming in unison to express their reaction to the suddenness of the news. Most fans could not believe it and thought it was too early for the English batter to take this decision. Many however also expressed their joy of having watched him play in the ODI format.

The England southpaw scored 2919 runs in the 107 ODI matches he played with an average just shy of 40. Additionally, he also took 74 wickets in the 50-over format.

Taking to Twitter and Instagram, the England Test captain announced his retirement with a post that read, “I will play my last game for England in ODI cricket on Tuesday in Durham. I have decided to retire from this format. This has been an incredibly tough decision to make. I have loved every minute of playing with my mates for England. We have had an incredible journey on the way.”

He ended the long post with a massive thanks to the English fans, “As always, the England fans have always been there for me and will continue to be there. You’re the best fans in the world. I hope we can win on Tuesday and set the series up nicely against South Africa. Thanks.”

Virat Kohli, who played against Ben Stokes in the recently concluded ODI series in England, has been an admirer of the England all-rounder. Under Stoke’s Instagram post, the Indian batter wrote, “You are the most competitive bloke I have ever played against. Respect".
