With Australia leading the series 2-0, Todd Murphy, a fellow offspinner, will likely take his position for the third Test versus England at Headingley, which begins on Thursday.

Australia's squad has been cut to 16, with seam bowler Michael Neser remaining after being added at the last minute for the World Test Championship final as well as the first two Ashes Tests. Reserve batter Matt Renshaw, who was fielding for Lyon on the last day of the Lord's Test, was removed from the team but will remain in the UK on standby.

The right calf of Lyon, who was fielding, sustained what he characterised as a "decent tear" during the second day of the Lord's Test. Despite heroically batting on one leg in order to assist Australia add fifteen additional runs to their total in the second innings, which was crucial to the outcome of the game, he failed to field and bowl anymore throughout the contest.

On Sunday, Lyon had a meeting with Australia's medical professionals to get confirmation about what he had already assumed, his tour was finished. His extraordinary stretch of 100 straight Tests was ended by it. He played his 122nd and 100th consecutive tests, respectively, at Lord's. He is the only bowler in history to have played 100 consecutive Tests and only the sixth guy overall.
