Early this year, Virat Kohli left the Test captaincy after India lost the opportunity of winning a Test series in South Africa. Before this, he had left the Indian T20 League and T20I captaincy and was removed from the ODI captaincy. With this, his form with the bat also started declining and had a forgettable phase with the bat from the Indian T20 League 2022 to India's tour of England.

The right-hander took a break from the game and returned only days ahead of the ongoing Asia Cup 2022. In the tournament, he has scored two fifties in three games and has looked like his former self. Meanwhile, in the post-match press conference after the India-Pakistan game, he opened up on what went on after he left the Test captaincy. He revealed that former India skipper MS Dhoni was the only one to message him after the decision.

"I can tell you one thing: when I left Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person, with whom I have played previously - that was MS Dhoni," Kohli said. "Many people have my number. On TV, lots of people give suggestions, people have a lot to say, but whoever had my number, no one sent me a message.

Me and MS Dhoni have a genuine connection: Virat Kohli

The former India skipper, Kohli, added that he and MS Dhoni have a genuine connection and don't have any insecurities among each other. The former further added that he can reach out to MS whenever he needs.

"That respect, that connection you have with anyone, when it is genuine, it shows in this fashion because there is security at both ends. Neither does he need anything from me, nor do I need anything from him, and neither was he insecure from me or I was insecure from him. I can only say - if I want to say anything to anyone, I reach out to that person individually even if you want to help me.
