The schedule for the 2023 Asia Cup is about to be revealed as the planners consider any last-minute adjustments, particularly the location of the match between India and Pakistan. After India voiced concerns about crossing the border to compete, the 15th edition of the competition would be split between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) had just authorised the hybrid model after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) endorsed it. The final schedule is still being discussed by the ACC, the PCB, as well as Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
The first four games will most likely take place in Lahore, Pakistan before the remaining games are played in Sri Lanka. It is official that the competition will start on August 31 and end on September 17 with the championship match.
In order to better prepare for the 2023 ODI World Cup, the Asia Cup will switch back to the 50-over format. The competition will follow the same concept as its first two iterations, with six teams competing in a group stage from which four teams advance to the Super Four phase before the final.
They may change stance with every new chairman: Indian Cricket Board source
One of the Indian Cricket Board officials spoke to Inside Sport and gave some information regarding the Asia Cup 2023 schedule. They said, “There are some last-minute details to go over. The tentative schedule has been shared with the members. It should be out by this week. Colombo is an issue due to the monsoon season. We would have ideally hoped for the India vs Pakistan match in Colombo but rain could be an issue."
The source gave more information about the hybrid model and the stance of PCB on this structure. They said, “There is no question of changing the hybrid plan. Don’t forget it was PCB who requested the hybrid model. They may change stance with every new chairman but it does not work on the whims of one person. There is logistics, broadcasters, among other things that are involved."
