Team India are going to take on Sri Lanka on 7 January 2023 for the third and last match of the ongoing T20I series in Rajkot. After winning the series opener, the home side lost the second game against the visitors by 16 runs. So, all eyes are on the series decider in Rajkot. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill made his T20I debut in this series.
But, Gill failed to perform well in the first two matches. He scored only 12 runs in two innings, at an average of 6. So, the former India cricketer, Wasim Jaffer shared a star batter’s name to replace Gill in the third T20I. He said that Ruturaj Gaikwad should replace him in the playing XI for the series decider.
"I think Ruturaj Gaikwad should get a chance.” - Wasim Jaffer
While speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Wasim Jaffer said: "I think Ruturaj Gaikwad should get a chance. He has scored a lot of runs (in domestic cricket). He was outstanding in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Shubman Gill, on the other hand, hasn't been in great touch in the previous two matches. He has been disappointing. I will be tempted to play Ruturaj Gaikwad. He has been warming the benches for quite some time now."
Speaking about Ruturaj Gaikwad, he had a fantastic domestic season with the bat, especially in the white-ball formats. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022/23 season, he scored 295 runs in five innings, at an average of 59. Then, Gaikwad scored 660 runs in five innings, at a staggering average of 220. For India, Ruturaj has played nine T20Is so far where he has scored just 135 runs in eight innings, at an average of 16.87.
However, Jaffer also backed Arshdeep Singh after his horrible performance in the last game. "In the bowling department, I will back Arshdeep Sinch even though he had a forgetful day (in the 2nd T20I). You need to back him in this situation so that his confidence doesn't take a further hit. Apart from the one change in the batting department, I don't see any other changes in the XI," Wasim Jaffer said.
