India registered a big win against England in the first match of the T20I series in Southampton on Thursday. Hardik Pandya continued his stellar form with a bat and scored the highest runs of 51, for India. He then took four wickets to guide India to a 50-run win to take a lead in this three-match series. While Pandya stole the show on Thursday, another Indian batter Deepak Hooda also played a crucial knock to contribute to India’s big win.
The 27-year-old batter is enjoying a great run of form lately and continued his momentum in the first match as well. He scored an unbeaten 47 runs off 29 balls in the first match against Ireland last month and then smashed his first international century in the next match. He continues that form against Derbyshire in the warm-up match by scoring 59 runs off 37 balls.
On Thursday, Hooda came for batting in the number three position after an early wicket of captain Rohit Sharma. He quickly released the pressure by smashing a big six over the long-on to Moeen Ali’s delivery on the second ball. The ball landed on Sky Sports media pod where former English captain Eoin Morgan was commentating. Hooda smashed another six on the next ball and went on to score 33 runs off just 17 balls.
Rohit Sharma praises India's approach in powerplay overs:
India lost both the openers in the powerplay overs but scored crucial 66 runs in six overs because of Hooda’s cameo knock. The returning captain praised his teammates and admired India’s attacking approach in the powerplay overs.
“Great performance from ball one. All batters showed intent. Although the pitch was good, we played good shots and never got ahead of the game. You got to make use of those six overs in the powerplay. There is a certain approach we want to take in the powerplay. You got to back yourself in this game, sometimes it comes off, sometimes it doesn’t. The whole batting unit needs to understand the direction the team is taking and the guys were spot on today. I was impressed with his (Hardik) bowling,” Rohit Sharma said in the post-match conference.
