WATCH: Glen Phillips' brilliant catch to dismiss Kiwi batter Finn Allen during Washington Freedom vs San Francisco Unicorns MLC 2023 match

New Zealand's explosive batter Glen Phillips is known for his brilliant efforts on the field. He took one of the best catches of the inaugural edition of the USA’s Major League Cricket (MLC) during the match between Washington Freedom (WF) and San Francisco Unicorns (SFU). Kiwi batter Finn Allen attempted a lofted shot off the second delivery from Anrich Nortje’s bowling. However, Allen mistimed the shot, and the ball went towards the third man, Phillips judged it well and completed a brilliant diving catch.

After electing to bat first, the SFU scored 133 runs for the cost of eight wickets at Church Street Park in Morrisville. Glenn Phillips struggled with the bat throughout the game. Haris Rauf dismissed the right-handed hitter for a duck. The Kiwi wicket-keeper demonstrated exceptional fielding skills in the match and took catches of key batters in the opposition team, including Finn Allen, Matthew Wade, Corey Anderson, and Aaron Finch.

Saurabh Netravalkar shines big against San Francisco Unicorns

Chaitanya Bishnoi of Unicorns produced a great direct single to drive Matthew Short home in the opening inning, with Washington Freedom trailing at 28/1 after four overs. Saurabh Netravalkar claimed six wickets for nine runs as Washington Freedom secured a playoff spot in the inaugural MLC with a huge win against SFU.

The Aaron Finch-led side lost momentum and wickets at frequent intervals, finally losing by 30 runs. Netravalkar also dismissed Matthew Wade, leaving the Unicorns in severe difficulty at 31/4. Corey Anderson hit a courageous run-a-ball knock of 34 runs, but he received no help from the other end as the Francisco Unicorns were bowled out for 103 in 19.5 overs.

During the post-match presentation, Glenn Phillips said that he has set high standards for himself in the fielding department over the years. "At the end of the day, it’s all about mentality, everyone gives 100% into their fielding. I’ve set high standards for myself over the years. Fielding is the only thing you can do well if you haven’t scored many runs, I just want to do my level best, great effort from all the boys."
