Joe Root, the former England Test captain, has been in top form. He's recently played some fantastic red-ball cricket. While his team struggled to win enough games in 2021, Root continued his masterclass. He was named the ICC Test player of the year in for scoring 1708 runs in 15 matches in 2021.

Root's score was the third-highest in a calendar year, trailing only former Pakistan star Mohammad Yousuf and West Indies legend Viv Richards. He had two double centuries and four hundreds, including three in a row against India during England's home series.

Until recently, the right-handed batsman had not gotten his cap for being named ICC Test player of the year. Finally, ICC's official Twitter handle posted the video of him receiving the special cap. When current team captain Ben Stokes presented him with the cap, the 31-year-old was all smiles. The cricketer was applauded by everyone in the dressing room, including head coach Brendon McCullum. "Joe Root – The ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year. He finally gets his cap," read the caption of the tweet.

"I am incredibly proud to receive this award. I am very humbled to be in the same breath as a number of wonderful players around the world and it means a huge amount," he said when he was named the Test Player for the year 2021 in January.

"If there was one hundred that really sticks out it would probably be at Chennai against India, the first Test match of that series (he scored 218). With it being my 100th game it is something that will live long in the memory," he added.

In the meantime, Root's incredible form has continued this year. More recently, he scored a century in the first game of the home series against New Zealand. In the second innings of the first match, he produced a critical century when the team was in trouble. He guided the team to a five-wicket victory in the match.
