Trinbago Knight Riders ensured a top-two finish and a spot in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023 with a seven-wicket win over Saint Lucia Kings in Trinidad on Sunday, September 10. It was West Indies opener Mark Deyal's brilliant half-century that propelled Knight Riders to chase down a target of 168 with seven balls to spare. However, Lucia Kings spinner Peter Hatzoglou's stunning effort on the boundary line to dismiss the Player of the Match Deyal also grabbed eyeballs in the thrilling contest.

Knight Riders, who won the toss and chose to field first, got an early breakthrough as Jayden Seales dismissed Lucia Kings opener Johnson Charles in the fourth over. However, their former player Colin Munro hurt them with some powerful strikes, scoring an unbeaten 72 runs to take his side to 167/3 after 20 overs. Roston Chase (32 off 31) and Sean Williams (34 off 17) also made valuable contributions.

In reply, Martin Guptil gave a decent start but was dismissed by Chase in the fourth over. The visitors sensed an opening when Alzarri Joseph dangerous Nicholas Pooran inside the powerplay. However, Dayal ensured that the required rate did not go out of their control and cemented a solid partnership with Lorcan Tucker. The former was on song throughout his innings as he smashed 57 off 45, including six fours and two sixes.

Was that the only way to dismiss Mark Deyal?

Deyal had to be ousted at all costs if Lucia Kings were to regain control, but that didn't seem possible until Hatzoglou did something impressive on the boundary line. The Windies batter struck a massive top edge off Joseph's delivery and ball and looked to be clearing the boundary with ease at one point, but Hatzoglou denied it. The Australian was just in front of the rope as he slid sideways on the catch, but the ball bounced up and he juggled to take it on the second attempt, which he succeeded in doing.

The batter, fielding team and crowd, everyone were stunned. But Hatzoglou was not confident in the catch and was sent upstairs as he felt his right hand might have touched the ground outside the ropes during the second attempt. The third umpire had several looks at the replays and finally gave his verdict 'OUT', a fair decision for a fantastic effort.

Lucia Kings hoped to get back on track but it only opened the floodgates of boundaries as Andre Russell came out all guns blazing to take his side to the finish line. The Caribbean power-hitter smashed 29 off 13 with the help of two fours and three sixes as Knight Riders finished with 169/3 in 18.1 overs.
