There is a common notion among humans that nothing can drive you emotionally more than the feeling of returning to the motherland after making your people proud; especially after overcoming the situation when you find yourself on the receiving end of unnecessary hate and criticism just for being firm your reservations on some specific instances.
Similar is the story of the 24-time Grand Slam champion and the modern-day tennis legend from Serbia, Novak Djokovic. World No. 1 was banned from travelling to America for the US Open as he refused to get vaccinated during the COVID-19 outbreak expressing his personal reservations. After fighting all the odds, Djokovic made his comeback to New York after a wait of two years.
The 36-year-old made a heroic comeback this year as he clinched the title after defeating Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final of the tournament. The clock completely turned back and it was just another repetition of the US Open 2021 final where Djokovic failed to cross the line and had to go with disappointment after a loss in straight sets with a margin of 4-6, 4-6, and 4-6.
This moment was both proud and emotional for his entire county. In huge respect to their sporting superstar and a great human being, Serbia stood with heads high and welcomed their national pride; it all drove Djokovic emotionally and he broke down into tears after receiving such heart-whelming cheer and welcome to the motherland from his compatriots.
Here’s the video when Djokovic couldn’t hold his emotion:

Other than the ban on travelling to America, there was one other scar following him: the defeat in the US Open 2021 against the Russian number 3 ranked Medvedev. The Serbian star cleared all the books, be it with Medvedev for the loss of US Open 2021 or with New York for answering them what the meaning of a true champion stands for.
During the period of ban, Djokovic won a couple of Grand Slams, including one of the biggest last year in Wimbledon 2022.
