It was the 11th time for the five-time champions Mumbai under Rohit Sharma when they lost their campaign opener in the Indian T20 League. They locked horns in their opener in the ongoing Indian T20 League 2023 against Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The hosts’ skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to bowl first.

Batting first, Mumbai managed to post a total of 171 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs courtesy of a sensational knock played by young batter Tilak Varma in the middle-order. But Bangalore comfortably chased down the target in only 16.2 overs to win the match by a big margin of eight wickets to start their campaign on a winning note.

Later on, while talking about the team’s lineup, skipper Rohit Sharma came up with a very hard and fast-lined statement as a notice for Mumbai bowlers. He also mentioned the absence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the setup.

Here's what Rohit Sharma said after the defeat against Bangalore

“From the last six to eight months I am used to playing without Jasprit Bumrah. Of course, this is a different setup but someone needs to put their hand up and step up. We can't keep dwelling on it. Injuries are not in our control; we can't do much about them. The other guys in the setup are quite talented as well. We need to give them that support,” said Rohit Sharma after the eight-wicket defeat against Bangalore.

Speaking of the match, it was the young southpaw who played the blistering knock of 84 runs off just 46 balls with nine boundaries and four sixes to his name. His knock helped Mumbai to reach a decent total of 171 runs for the loss of seven wickets.

While chasing the target, the experienced opening pair of former skipper Virat Kohli and current skipper Faf du Plessis provided an outstanding start. The duo stitched an unbelievable partnership of 148 runs for the first wicket. Du Plessis scored 73 runs off just 43 balls with five boundaries and six sixes. While Kohli finished the match with an impressive six and an unbeaten knock of 82 runs off 49 balls with six boundaries and five sixes.

Eventually, skipper Faf won ‘the player of the match award for his match-defining knock in favor of the hosts.
