Asia Cup 2023 is probably the most frustrating tournament we have ever witnessed. Rain continues to play spoilsport from the third game of the event, interrupting the high-voltage India vs. Pakistan for the second time. With the group stage clash between the arch-rivals washed out, fans were hoping for a full game in the Super Fours stage on Sunday, but the rain gods showed no mercy as the game had to be postponed to the Reserve Day.
Pakistan won the toss and sent India to bat first at Colombo's R.Premadasa Stadium. The two openers got off to a blistering start and put on a 121-run stand. Just when we were about to witness a thrilling contest, the rain stopped the play with the scoreboard reading 147/2 in 24.1 overs. However, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was very aware of the conditions in Colombo and had previously announced a special reserve day on Monday.
The match is scheduled to resume at 3 pm IST on September 11 and it will be a full 50-over game with India starting from 24.1 overs. But will the rain god show mercy this time? Well, only God knows the answer! Even today the weather is not promising. However, on a satisfactory note, there was good sunshine in Colombo in the morning, but it might turn worse in the afternoon.
What would happen if the game gets washed out today?
If the Super Fours match between India and Pakistan is abandoned on the reserve day, then both teams will share one point each. This means Pakistan will move to the top of the Super Fours standings with three points as they defeated Bangladesh earlier. Sri Lanka also registered a win against Bangladesh and grabbed two points, knocking The Tigers almost out of the tournament.
In this scenario, India's last two Super Fours matches against Sri Lanka (September 12) and Bangladesh (September 15) will be must-win for the Men in Blue to reach a total of five points and advance to the final. A loss of even one of these matches or two more washouts would limit India's points to three and put their qualification chances in jeopardy.
