Dasun Shanaka

In what seems to be a big blow, the media reports have learned something which is not going to have some good impacts on the Sri Lankan cricket team ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023, in India. It has been understood by the sources that the current ODI skipper Dasun Shanaka is likely to step down from his captaincy role before the commencement of the marquee international tournament, in India.

Notably, the Islanders performed quite well and made it to the final of the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023. Unfortunately, they collapsed in the summit clash against India and lost the match by a big margin of 10 wickets. Dasun Shanaka’s men got bundled out just at the score of 50 runs in 15.2 overs, surrendering against the ferocious pace attack led by the star pacer Mohammed Siraj.

Coming back to Dasun Shanaka, the Sri Lankan team has enjoyed good success under his captaincy. Notably, they maintained the second-longest winning streak in the ODIs, with 13 consecutive wins, just after Australia’s 21 consecutive wins in 2003.

They also clinched the title of the Asia Cup 2022 under Shanaka’s leadership when the tournament was played in the T20I format. They defeated Pakistan in the final of the tournament to win their sixth title in the history of the tournament.

Sri Lanka are among one of the very few teams who haven’t announced their squads for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. Amidst all this, there are also speculations that the star batter Kusal Mendis might take over the charge of captaincy if Shanaka steps down from the role ahead of the tournament.

The 1996 World Cup champions will start their run in ODI World Cup 2023 with their campaign opener against Temba Bavuma-led South Africa. Both teams will play this match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Here’s how fans reacted to the news of Dasun Shanaka quitting Sri Lanka captaincy:
