Shubman Gill has had a parabolic curve in his international career till now. The young batter from Firozpur made the headlines with his fantastic numbers in the under-19 days. The Punjab batter was soon drafted to the Indian side. In ODIs against New Zealand in 2019, Gill made his international debut. But things did not go as expected for Gill.

Until December 2020, Gill had played only 3 ODI matches in international cricket and scored 49 runs at an average of just 16.33. The 23-year-old had not even debuted in T20Is for India. He debuted only in 2023 in the format. The failure of Prithvi Shaw in the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020/21 meant Gill got his Test debut.

Gill had a remarkable Test debut. When India was dismissed for their least Test score in Adelaide, Gill came as a ray of hope in Melbourne, as he scored 45 and 35* runs respectively in the Test. He further scored a 50 and 31 in Sydney and really hit it out of the park in Brisbane with a match-winning 91 in India’s historic win.

Failure in the longest format of the game

From then, Gill has found it tough to continue in the longest format of the game. From February 2021, Gill has played 26 innings and scored 678 runs at an average of just 27.12 including 2 hundred. In 2023, Gill has 201 runs in 7 innings at an average of 28.71. Barring the hundred in Ahmedabad, Gill has not done anything significant with the bat in Test cricket in 2023.

Owing to his recent failures, Gill was demoted a position down to bat at number 3 against West Indies. The move has not worked till now. In the first Test, Gill scored 6 runs in 11 balls. In the second innings, the star batter from India scored only 10 runs in 12 balls. Gill averages only 8.00 with the bat in the series after facing 23 deliveries. The youngster has not been able to live up to his expectations in the format.
