Former Australia skipper and the modern-day batting great, Steve Smith achieved a new milestone in ODI cricket as he completed 5000 ODI runs. The veteran batter achieved this amazing feat in the ongoing third and last ODI of the three-match series against India. Both teams are playing this match at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot.
He has also become the 17th Australian batter to complete 5,000 ODI runs, he is just behind the former star batting all-rounder Andrew Symonds, who had scored 5088 runs to his credit in the ODIs. In-form Smith is going to be a very crucial element for the five-time World Cup champions, Australia in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, in India.
Speaking of the action of the ongoing third ODI between India and Australia, the visiting skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bat first. Batting first, the opening pair of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh provided a strong start to Australia as they stitched a partnership of 78 runs for the first wicket in 8.1 overs, before Marsh got caught behind the wickets by KL Rahul off Prasidh Krishna.
Currently, the Aussies have scored 232 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 30.2 overs, having Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne there in the middle on the individual scores of 70 and 8 runs, respectively.
India leading the three-match ODI series by 2-0
Notably, the hosts, India are already ahead in the three-match series with an unassailable lead of 2-0 after two straight and comfortable wins in the first and second ODI in Mohali and Indore, respectively.
Following the conclusion of this series, India and Australia will take on each other in their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign opener on Sunday, October 8. Both teams will this match high-octane match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Prior to that, both teams will also feature against the other participating teams in the warm-up matches, including the likes of England and the Netherlands.
