In what has come out as a mood dampener for Indian fans, Neeraj Chopra is set to miss out on the Commonwealth Games 2022 with a thigh injury. The injury that Chopra sustained in his fourth throw at the World Athletics Championship has become led to the same. Thus, it has ended his CWG 2022 campaign even before it started.
A statement by the Indian Olympics Association read, "Our Olympic Champ @Neeraj_chopra1 will not be defending his title at @birminghamcg22 due to concerns regarding his fitness. We wish him a speedy recovery & are supporting him in these challenging times,"
"He (Neeraj Chopra) is not fit as he got injured in the finals of World Athletics Championships. He informed us about this," Rajeev Mehta, IOA Secretary General, told ANI confirming the omission of India's star athlete from CWG 2022.
Earlier Neeraj Chopra complained about discomfort in the thigh area after winning Silver at the World Athletics Championship.
"I thought even the fourth throw could have gone farther. After that, I felt something on my thigh and could not do my best in the next two. I had strapping (on the thigh). I will know the status tomorrow morning because my body is still warm after the event. I hope there should not be any issue for the upcoming events, Commonwealth Games," he had said post his historic win at the global event.
Notably, the Indian Javelin star became just the second Indian athlete to win a medal at the World Athletics Championship in Oregon. With a throw of 88.13 m, the Indian athlete was able to come second among 12 finalists. Grenada’s Anderson Peters came first with a massive throw of 90.54m and won Gold.
Neeraj Chopra was set to go head to head again with Peters at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham before his campaign ended before it even took off.
India has sent a strong 311 athlete contingent to the CWG 2022 and is hoping to do well in the multi-sport event.
