Shreyas Iyer is all set to return to action for Team India in the first ODI of the three-match ODI series against Australia. The hosts, India will take on the Aussies in the ODI series opener at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali tomorrow Friday, September 22. Iyer was excluded from the Indian squad due to a back spasm just before India’s first super-4 clash against the arch-rivals, Pakistan.
He was replaced by the star wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul in the game against Pakistan; the latter was also making his comeback from an injury, he sustained during the Indian Premier League 2023 earlier.
Due to the prolonged time in recovery, Iyer couldn’t play the rest of the matches in the Asia Cup 2023, including the super-4 round followed by the final of the tournament against the hosts, Asia Cup 2023.
Iyer’s comeback in the ODI series against Australia will strengthen the middle order of Team India, which also includes the likes of Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya. Apart from that, the top order of the Indian team is also studded with the in-form batters in the opening pair of skipper Rohit Sharma and his young mate Shubman Gill, alongside the former skipper Virat Kohli.
Here's a look at India’s squad for the first two ODIs against Australia:
KL Rahul (c), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna, R Ashwin, and Washington Sundar.
India’s squad for the third ODI against Australia:
Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel (subject to fitness), R Ashwin, and Washington Sundar.
Following the conclusion of the ODI series against Australia, Rohit Sharma’s men will play the two warm-up matches against England and the Netherlands before the main round of the ODI World Cup 2023.

He looked in great nick in the limited time he was on the crease in the 1st match against Pakistan in Asia cup. He middled every ball he faced till his pull shot went straight into Fakhar Zaman's hands.

If he is in good form, I guess.. management will prefer him ahead of Ishan.
