Former Australia skipper and one of the modern-day batting greats, Steve Smith expressed his interest in opening for Australia in the longer format of the game. Smith’s statement has come in light of David Warner’s announcement of retiring from Test cricket after the ongoing third and last Test of the three-match series against Pakistan.

Notably, David Warner already announced his retirement from the ODIs just on the first day of the new year 2024 on Monday, January 1, 2024.

Meanwhile, Steve Smith came up with a statement in which he opened up about his interest in opening the innings for the Aussies in the traditional format of the game.

"I'm happy to go up the top. I'm pretty keen if that's what they want to do. I'm sure the selectors and Ron [Andrew McDonald] and Patty [Cummins] will have a chat after this game but yeah, I'm certainly interested for sure," said Smith to ABC Grandstand.

Australia in a dominant position in the third Test in Sydney

Speaking of the action of the ongoing third and last Test of the series between Australia and Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney, the hosts are looking in a very dominant position as they pushed Pakistan on the backfoot by the time of stumps on the third day of the match.

Pakistan started batting in their second innings with a 14-run lead at the end of the first innings courtesy of a brilliant six-wicket haul claimed by the star pacer Aamer Jamal. The visitors were looking quite stabilized at the score of 58 runs for the loss of 2 wickets, after losing two wickets early in the first two overs. But then happened an unbelievable collapse of Pakistan’s batting attack and they lost the next 5 wickets just within 9 runs to go 67 runs for the loss of 7 wickets at the end of the day’s play.

Coming back to Steve Smith, he is expected to start opening the innings for Australia in Tests after David Warner’s retirement. Aussie wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey also said that the former captain can bat wherever he wants.
