As the T20 series against Afghanistan approaches, the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar is grappling with challenging decisions, especially concerning the inclusion of experienced players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the squad for the World Cup in June. Both stalwarts have not participated in the T20 format for India since the T20 World Cup semifinal against England in November 2022, introducing an additional element of intrigue to the selection process.
The selection committee, comprising members Shiv Sunder Das and Salil Ankola are presently in South Africa. They will collaborate with head coach Rahul Dravid, along with Test and ODI skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli, to conclude the squad for the series against Afghanistan. The atmosphere is charged with expectation as approximately 30 T20 specialists, including IPL stars, undergo scrutiny in preparation for the major event in the Caribbean and the United States.
The choice of whether to incorporate Rohit and Kohli in the brief series commencing on January 11 in Mohali or assess their form and fitness during the IPL remains undecided. The two contemporary legends have conveyed their eagerness to participate in the T20 World Cup, a sentiment that is eagerly anticipated by fans. Given the commencement of the England Tests in Hyderabad on January 25, it appears improbable that Rohit and Virat, even if chosen, would be extensively involved beyond a couple of matches.
"Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya aren't fit. The Afghanistan series won't tell you anything. Everything will be decided on the basis of the first month of IPL,” A senior source said as quoted by NDTV.
Player’s workload management will be monitored by board during IPL 2024
Acknowledging the intricacies of workload management, the Indian Cricket Board (ICB) is aware of the limitations in directing franchises on player usage during the IPL 2024. As a result, the selection committee is expected to closely monitor 25 to 30 players during the two months of the IPL. This will provide a contingency plan in case of injuries or fitness concerns.
However, the newly-elected Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya might present a distinctive challenge due to the absence of a direct replacement. Also keeping in mind the World Cup 2024 around the corner it is essential for monitoring the players.
