India captain Rohit Sharma gave England captain Ben Stokes his first Test series defeat in the ‘BazBall’ era in JSCA International Stadium Complex, in Ranchi. India defeated England by 5 wickets to take a 3-1 lead in the five-match Test series. Earlier in the Test match England won the toss and elected to bat first. England faced a setback on Day 1 itself as their start didn’t get pretty well. Former England captain Joe Root took the responsibility on his shoulders as he scored his first century in this series and helped the team to recover from the score of 122 runs for 5 5-wicket loss.
On Day 4 of the fourth Test match in the last innings, Rohit Sharma scored fifty as India lost quick wickets. But Dhruv Jurel and Shubman Gill stood and took the game towards the Indian side. In 60.5 overs India chased the target of 192 runs set by England. India also extended their winning streak in the Test series as they won the 17th Test series at home. India only lost a home Test series 12 years ago by England under the captaincy of Alastair Cook.
As big names were missed in this series youngsters stood up and made sure India won the series in Ranchi. In the Test series so far Yashasvi Jaiswal has been the leading run-scorer. His performance is quite interesting in this series. He equalled the record for most runs in a Test series against England with Virat Kohli while he also broke Virender Sehwag's record of hitting sixes.
India dominates England
In the first innings, Dhruv Jurel missed his first century by 10 runs but his knock helped India to get out of trouble. On Day 1 of the fourth Test Akash Deep who made his debut took 3 wickets as was important player for the team. Apart from the young players India’s most valuable player Ravichandran Ashwin also played an important role as he became the highest wicket-taker for India in Test by surpassing Anil Kumble.
On home soil, Ravichandran Ashwin is just the second player to take 350 Test wickets. He also become the first Indian bowler to get 100 Test wickets against England and Australia. On the other hand, India captain Rohit Sharma scored more than 4000 runs in Test cricket. He is the 17th Indian batter to achieve this feat. He also marked 9000 runs in his first-class career.
Dhurv Jurel and Shubman Gill put on a 72-run partnership as India put on a solid performance to put an end to Ben Stokes's unbeaten Test series run as a captain. Before the India tour, England captain Ben Stokes has gone unbeaten in six Tests. The final Test match in the series will be played from 7th March in HPCA stadium, Dharamsala.
