India recently faced a massive defeat by an innings and 32 runs against South Africa in the first Test of the two-match Test series. India’s batting attack failed drastically against the Proteas pace attack in the second innings of the match. The match lasted only three days as the hosts claimed a big win to take a lead of 1-0 in the two-match series.
Meanwhile, the former England skipper Michael Vaughan came quite hard-and-fast-lined while speaking about India’s performances in recent times at the highest level of the game. He also went on to call India one of the most underachieving cricketing sides.
"They've been nowhere in recent times." - Michael Vaughan
“They haven’t won much in recent times. I think they are (an underachieving side). They don’t win anything. When was the last time they won something? With all the talent they have, all the skill set (they should have achieved more. They’ve won in Australia twice (Test series in 2018/19 and 2020/21). Magnificent. But the last few World Cups, (they have) been nowhere, in the last few T20 World Cups, (they have) been nowhere,” said Vaughan during a conversation in a panel on Fox Sports.
“They’re a good team. They have plenty of talent but with all the talent they have and the resources they have, I don’t think they win,” he added later.
Notably, Vaughan also referred to India’s breakdown in the ODI World Cup 2023 final and their elimination from the semi-finals in the last two World Cups.
Speaking of the ongoing Test assignment against South Africa, both teams will now lock horns in the second and last Test of the series on January 3 at the Newlands in Cape Town. It is just another addition to India’s tours of South Africa in which they failed to win a Test series. Earlier in their 8 tours of the Rainbow Nation, India always failed to win a series since 1992 as they either ended up losing it or ending it on a draw.
