India under the captaincy of regular skipper Rohit Sharma continued their winning run against Afghanistan with the second successive win in the three-match T20I series. Both teams played the second fixture of the T20I series at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday, January 14 2024.
The hosts’ skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first; batting first, the veteran number three batter Gulbadin Naib scored a crucial half-century for Afghanistan in the first innings; he scored 57 runs off just 35 balls, with 5 fours and 4 sixes. other than him, Najibullah Zadran and Karim Janat also played the knocks of 23 and 20 runs, respectively, followed by Mujeeb ur Rahman’s 21 runs off just 9 balls, with 2 fours and 2 sixes.
On the back of these contributions, Afghanistan managed to post a total of 172 runs, losing their all the wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Young Indian left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh scalped 3 wickets, alongside two wickets each bagged by the spinners Ravi Bishnoi ad Axar Patel. Besides these three, star all-rounder Shivam Dube also picked one wicket for India.
While chasing the target, India faced a big blow when they lost the first wicket in skipper Rohit Sharma just at the team’s score of 5 runs in the first over. Following that, there came a crucial 57-run partnership between young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and former skipper Virat Kohli for the second wicket before the latter fell prey to Naveen-ul-Haq at the individual score of 29 runs off 16 balls.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube carry India's fiery run-chase
But it was also the time when Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube launched an onslaught over the Afghanistan bowlers; the young and talented duo stitched an amazing 92-run partnership to the third wicket in only 7 overs. Jaiswal smashed 68 runs off just 34 balls, with 5 fours and 6 sixes, with a sensational strike rate of 200.00 before he was caught behind the wickets by Rahmanullah Gurbaz off Karim Janat in the 13th over.
