The veteran Australia opener David Warner is set to put a curtain on his illustrious Test career with one last appearance in the upcoming third and last Test of the three-match series against Pakistan. Warner will be playing his career’s last Test at his home ground, Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney, starting on Wednesday, January 3 2024.
Meanwhile, the 37-year-old announced his immediate retirement from the ODI format on the first day of the new year 2024 on Monday, January 1, 2024. Amidst all this, Warner’s childhood friend and his current opening partner Usman Khawaja was quite emotional while speaking about his friend’s retirement from Test cricket.
"He is such a different person when he is back home and with his family." - Usman Khawaja about David Warner
Notably, Warner also got quite emotional while talking about Usman Khawaja during his press conference just after the announcement of his retirement, held at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney ahead of the third Test against Pakistan.
“It is quite special and quite emotional; I haven’t seen that. You don’t see that side of Davey (Warner) at all. He doesn’t show you that side when he is playing. He is a fierce competitor. You see the Bull and you see him go out there and play hard and I have known him for a long time and I know that side of him,” said Usman Khawaja to Fox Sports.
“Something I love about Davey and probably the thing I love about him the most is you see what he is like on the cricket field, but he is such a different person when he is back home and with his family. I have known his parents Loraine and Howard for a long time and their family is good mates with my family,” he added later.
Furthermore, Usman Khawaja also spoke about his friendship and cricketing journey with David Warner as the duo also played together in age-group cricket in their childhood.
“Playing together and being together for so long, the journey is bizarre and one part of that journey is coming to an end. He has stopped playing Test cricket and One Day Internationals and he put so much time and effort into it and there is so much heart, soul and tears that go into it,” he said.
