The star Sri Lanka opener Pathum Nissanka entered the history books with a sensational ODI double century in the first ODI of the three-match series against Afghanistan. Nissanka became the first-ever Sri Lankan batter to score an ODI double-century. It is also the 12th ODI double century since former legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar achieved this milestone 14 years back in the year 2010.

Nissanka played a blistering knock of 210 runs off just 139 balls with 20 fours and 8 sixes with the bat in the ongoing Pallekele against Afghanistan. He surpassed the former legendary Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya to register the highest individual score for Sri Lanka in the ODIs.

Apart from his double century, the star opener also stitched an amazing opening partnership of 182 runs for the first wicket with his opening partner Avishka Fernando; the latter also scored 88 runs off 88 balls, with 8 fours and 3 sixes. Later in the end, star middle-order batter Sadeera Samarawickrama also contributed with 44 runs off 36 balls, with 4 fours and a six.

One of the greatest knocks in Sri Lankan cricket history

On the back of Nissanka’s double-century, alongside crucial knocks from Fernando and Samarawickrama, Sri Lanka posted a big total of 381 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in the allotted 50 overs.

Coming back to Pathum Nissanka, he has been consistent with the bat in his ODI career since he made his debut in the format for Sri Lanka three years back in the year 2021. He has played 50 ODIs so far, including the ongoing match against Afghanistan.

In the 50 innings of these 50 matches Nissanka has played, he has scored 1938 runs with a commendable average of 43.07, including 4 centuries and a double century, alongside 13 half-centuries.

The cricket fans also came up with praising remarks for the star opener and hailed his batting excellence for playing one of the greatest knocks in the history of Sri Lankan cricket.
