In a delightful piece of news for Indian cricket fans, the veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has been selected for the Arjuna Award. Shami has been given this prestigious award in Indian sports for his sensational bowling performances throughout the entire ODI World Cup 2023. His brilliant performances helped India comfortably make it to the tournament's final; however, they couldn’t cross the last barrier and lost to Australia. However, it was Shami who garnered a huge praise even from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Shami will receive the Arjuna Award from the President of India next Tuesday, January 9. Currently, Shami is on break from international cricket as he has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa as he failed to gain his complete fitness and struggling with an ankle injury.
Mohammed Shami ended up as the leading wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup 2023
Speaking of Shami’s performance for India in the ODI World Cup 2023, he scalped 24 wickets in just 7 innings of the 7 matches, he played in the tournament. The Amroha-born pacer finished as the leading wicket-taker in the prestigious cricket quadrennial and won the ‘Golden Ball Award for his outstanding outings.
His best bowling performance in the tournament came against New Zealand in the first semi-final of the tournament. He scalped 7 wickets in that match against the Kiwis, which was also the best performance by an Indian paper in the history of the tournament.
The news of Mohammed Shami getting the Arjuna Award also attracted a lot of amazing and heartfelt reactions from cricket fans; they lauded Shami for coming out of all hardships and emerging as a hero of Team India in the marquee international tournament.
