Earlier on day 1 of the first Test of the two-match series, the hosts dominated most of the part on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test. Indian top order crumbled against the Proteas pace attack as they lost 3 wickets just at the score of 24 runs in the initial phase of the first innings.

Later, former skipper Virat Kohli and star middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer stitched a crucial partnership of 68 runs for the fourth wicket. Kohli and Iyer contributed with the individual scores of 38 and 31 runs, respectively. Apart from these two, lower middle-order batter Shardul Thakur also added 24 runs with the bat, hitting 3 fours with the bat.

Eventually, India ended up with 208 runs on the board for the loss of 8 wickets, having KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj there in the middle at the individual scores of 70 and 0 runs, respectively.

Star Proteas pacer Kagiso Rabada impressed everyone with his stellar bowling performance; he claimed a five-wicket haul; he also achieved a big milestone, completing 500 international wickets across all formats. Apart from Rabada, Marco Jansen and Nandre Burger also claimed 1 and 2 wickets, respectively for South Africa.
