Following a 28-run defeat against England in the first Test of the five-match series, India have faced another setback as the star Jasprit Bumrah has been handed one demerit point. He was found guilty by Cricket Governing Body to breach level 1 of the cricketing code of conduct in the first Test of the series against England.

The incident happened in the 81st over of the second innings when England’s star number three batter Ollie Pope left his crease for a run; in the same line of events, Jasprit Bumrah intentionally came in Pope’s way and made a shoulder push, which was later considered as the ‘inappropriate’ physical contact.

In the Cricket Governing Body’s decision, Bumrah was found guilty of breaching Article 2.12 of the code of conduct for players and player support personnel. This article rules about, “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match.”

“Bumrah admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit levelled the charge,” read the official statement of Cricket Governing Body through a media release.

“Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points,” he added later.

Jasprit Bumrah scalped a total of 6 wickets in the first Test of the five-match series against England, picking 2 and 4 wickets in the first and second innings, respectively. Now, he will be in action for India in the second Test of the series at the ACA-VDCA International Cricket Stadium in Vishakhapatnam, starting on February 2.
