England defeated India by 28 runs in the first Test of the five-match series to gain a lead of 1-0 in the series. Both teams played this match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. The match went on to the fourth day with a thrilling finish in the favour of the visitors.

England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bat first; India bundled out the Three Lions at the score of 246 runs in the first innings on the first day of the game. Visitors’ skipper Ben Stokes was the leading run-scorer for his side in the first innings with a knock of 70 runs.

In response to England’s 236-run score in the first innings, India managed to score 436 runs to get a lead of 190 runs at the end of the first innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja scored 80, 86 and 87 runs, respectively in the first innings.

Later in the second innings, England on the back of Ollie Pope’s brilliant 196-run knock, posted a big total of 420 runs in the second innings to post a 231-run winning target for India in the fourth innings.

India failed to get better of visiting bowlers in the second innings

While chasing the target, India got a decent start from the opening pair of young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Rohit Sharma before the former fell prey to the England debutant Tom Hartley.

Just after that, India kept losing the wickets at regular intervals, if not quick and had lost 7 wickets at the score of 119 runs at one stage, being 112 runs behind the target. But then came a well-fought 58-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Ravichandran Ashwin and wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat.

However, the duo couldn’t cross the line for India and India eventually got bundled out at the score of 202 runs despite a fighting intent from the last pair of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj. England debutant Tom Hartley scalped a brilliant 7-wicket haul to help England in this amazing win..

Eventually, Ben Stokes & co. won the match by a margin of 28 runs to gain a lead of 1-0 in the five-match series against India.
