After a week of speculation, all ten Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises announced their final retention lists. Ahead of the mini-auction, some teams have reconsidered some of their decisions and gone for a full revamp, while others have stuck with their core for one more season.

Teams like the Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, and Rajasthan Royals have stayed with their core teams, while Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders have gone for an overhaul. A total of 85 players were released by all ten teams on Sunday. However, some of the most expensive players have also been released by teams ahead of the key auctions, making it an interesting one. So, here are the top 5 most expensive players released before the player auction.

#5. Harshal Patel (10.75 Cr)

RCB released Harshal Patel due to a noticeable decline in his performance during the 2023 IPL season. Despite earning the nickname "Purple Patel" for winning the Purple Cap in the 2021 IPL with exceptional bowling, Patel faced a stark downturn in form. His economy rate, which had previously been impressive, surged close to 10 in the 2023 edition, prompting the franchise to make the decision to release him.

#4. Wanindu Hasranga (10.75 Cr)

Despite Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) initially banking on Wanindu Hasaranga's spin prowess and his hattrick heroics in the T20 World Cup, the franchise opted to release him. Injuries and inconsistent performances during the IPL hindered his overall impact. While Hasaranga showcased immense potential, his difficulties in maintaining economic spells at crucial moments led to RCB's decision to part ways with the talented spinner.

#3. Shardul Thakur (10.75 Cr)

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made the decision to release Shardul Thakur ahead of the IPL 2024 season, citing a dip in form that hindered the player's usual impactful performances. Thakur struggled to make a significant impact during the 2023 season, scoring a mere 113 runs in 11 innings and securing only seven wickets. His below-par contributions proved insufficient to propel KKR towards playoff success, leading to the team's decision to part ways with the seasoned player.

#2. Harry Brook (13.25 Cr)

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had high hopes for Harry Brook, anticipating a valuable addition to their squad. However, the promising cricketer's debut season didn't live up to expectations, considering his hefty price tag of 13.25 crore rupees. Brook's overall performance was subpar despite displaying glimpses of talent, including a noteworthy century. Grappling against spin and finishing the season with an average of 21.11 and a strike rate of 123.38, his contributions didn't justify the substantial investment made by SRH, leading to the decision to release him.

#1. Ben Stokes (16.25 Cr)

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had secured English all-rounder Ben Stokes for over 16 crore rupees, creating high expectations. However, the returns were minimal, with only 15 runs in two matches and an expensive over-conceding 18 runs. Despite Stokes' acclaimed skills, his performance fell short of expectations, raising questions about the substantial investment made. Considering his history of injuries, CSK released him, emphasising the team's need for players who can consistently contribute to their campaign. It's worth noting that the classy allrounder opted out of the next edition of the tournament too.
