The match number 5 of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9 saw two former champions clash against each other. But eventually, it was Multan Sultans (MUL) who held on their nerves in a thrilling last-over finish against Islamabad United (ISL). MUL won the game by five wickets and registered their second victory in a row against a strong ISL bowling lineup. With this win, MUL have also climbed up to the top spot on the points table whereas ISL have faced their first loss of the PSL 9.

Earlier in the game, it was skipper Mohammad Rizwan who won the toss and elected to bowl first on their home ground. Batting first, ISL did not have the best of starts as the dynamic duo of Colin Munro (8) and Alex Hales (2) were dismissed in the batting powerplay. However, it was Agha Salman (52) and Jordan Cox (41) who steadied the ship for ISL.

The duo stitched a brilliant partnership of 68 runs to provide a respective total for ISL. But in the end, it was all MUL bowlers who bowled terrific in the end at the death overs. It is also to be kept in mind that ISL lost the last five wickets scoring just four runs. The star for MUL with the ball in hand was Mohammad Ali who took three wickets along with Abbas Afridi who also picked up three wickets.

Multan Sultans scored their second win in a row

In pursuit of the total, Mohammad Rizwan faced early pressure, particularly from the Shah brothers' impressive bowling spell. Naseem Shah's dismissal of Dawid Malan was a significant breakthrough for the visiting team. Rizwan and Reeza Hendricks then steadied the ship against Islamabad's strong bowling lineup, forging a crucial 71-run partnership. However, the accumulation of dot balls could have been costly.

Imad Wasim and skipper Shadab Khan tightened the screws with their precise spin bowling, taking two wickets and conceding only 57 runs in their combined 8 overs. Reeza Hendricks orchestrated the innings well with his composed 58-run innings, reaching his fifty in the 17th over to boost the run chase. Although Hendricks departed in the next over, Iftikhar Ahmed ensured the job was finished for his team in the final over.
