Medium-pacer Deepak Chahar is having a troubled time with injuries in the last few months. Chahar first sustained a right quadriceps injury in February this year. That kept him out of the game for a good two months. The right-arm bowler was set to return for Chennai in the ongoing Indian T20 League after the halfway mark.
However, another injury popped up which ruled him out for the entire season. He sustained a back injury during his rehab at the National Cricket Academy. The next season is 11-12 months away but injuries might pop again. Deepak Chahar progress has been halted by injuries on numerous occasions. He isn't likely to be available for the upcoming international assignments. And, there could be a chance that he might not be available for the next edition of the Indian T20 League as well.
In this article, we will discuss three players who can replace him in the 2023 season.
- Tushar Deshpande
The Mumbai player hasn't been able to make a mark in the league but has done well in domestic cricket. In the 33 games he played, he has picked 45 wickets, averaging 22.62. He has picked those number of wickets at an economy rate of 8.72 and a strike rate of 15.5. Besides, he has two four-wicket hauls to his name, including his best figures of 19/4. The right-arm pacer can clock more than 140s and was part of the Chennai team in the Indian T20 League 2022.
2. Rajwardhan Hangargekar
The 2022 U19 World Cup winner was part of the Chennai setup in the ongoing season. He can be the perfect replacement for Chahar as he can also bat just like the latter. The right-hander has a strike rate of 350 in the five List A games he has played so far.
Talking about his bowling, he has picked 10 wickets at an average of 22.40 and strike rate of 26.3. Notably, he is quicker than Chahar as he can bowl at more than 140kmph.
3. KM Asif
The right-arm pacer has been part of the team since 2018 but has played only three games so far. The team management including coaches must have seen some potential in him which is why he has been in the team for so long.
He has played 20 games in domestic cricket and has 21 scalps to his name averaging 24.04 and a strike rate of 17.7. His economy rate of 8.12 isn't that bad either and holds the best bowling figures of 25/3. It will be interesting to see if he gets retain by the team as the next year, you might see a mini auction.
