Royal Challengers Bangalore Women locked horns with Delhi Capitals Women in the 7th match of the ongoing Women’s Premier League 2024. Both teams played this match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, February 29. The hosts’ skipper Smriti Mandhana won the toss and asked Delhi Capitals Women to bat first.

Batting first, the Capitals posted a good total of 194 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. star opener Shafali Verma scored a crucial half-century, aggregating 50 runs off 31 balls, with 3 fours and 4 sixes, alongside Alice Capsey’s 46 runs off 33 balls, with 4 fours and 2 sixes. The duo also stitched an all-important 82-run partnership for the second wicket in Delhi’s favour.

Later at the end of the innings, the star Aussie all-rounder Jess Jonassen also played a blistering cameo for Delhi Capitals Women; she smashed 36 runs off just 16 balls, with 4 fours and 2 sixes followed by Marizanne Kapp’s 32 runs off just 16 balls, with 2 fours and 3 sixes.

On the back of these crucial performances, Delhi Capitals Women managed to score 194 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the first innings.

Skipper Mandhana's efforts go in vain as RCB fell short

While chasing the target, the RCB Women skipper Smriti Mandhana smashed a fiery knock of 74 runs off just 43 balls, with 10 fours and 3 sixes with the bat. Besides Mandhana, it was only Sabbhineni Meghana who played a struggling knock of 36 runs off 31 balls with 2 fours and a six.

Eventually, Smriti Mandhana’s 43-ball 74 went in vain RCB Women couldn’t chase down the target and fell 26 runs short of target and lost the match by 25 runs, scoring 169 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the entire 20 overs. It is also the first loss for Smriti Mandhana’s RCB in the ongoing WPL 2024 while Delhi Capitals Women have registered their second consecutive win in the tournament.
