Shubman Gill did not have a great start to his T20I series against the West Indies. In the first T20I, Gill was dismissed for just 3 runs in 9 balls while chasing a target of 150. In the second T20I, Gill failed yet again as he scored only 7 runs in 9 balls. In the third T20I, the opening batter failed as he scored 6 runs in 11 balls while chasing a target of 160 runs.
In the fourth T20I though, Gill made a good comeback and scored 77 runs in 47 balls and helped India to win the match. Along with Jaiswal, Gill framed a sensational 165-run partnership for the first wicket. In his stay in the middle, Gill scored 3 fours and 5 sixes. The rhythm and flow of the 23-year-old impressed everyone. The chase was made to look easier by the two young batters.
'It is important to go to your basics' - Gill
After the match, Gill talked with Arshdeep Singh, his fellow teammate, on the BCCI-TV show. “It is important to go to your basics. You have to identify whether you are making any mistakes. I felt I was not making a mistake in any of the three matches. But I could not convert my starts,” said Gill to Arshdeep during his interaction with the left-arm pacer in the post-match show.
“T20 format is like that. When you have 3-4 matches where a good shot is caught by the fielder, and you have to eye for making quick runs, you do not have time to think much. You just look at what your template was when you were consistently scoring runs” added Gill and hoped for improved consistency in his performances.
Gill was criticized for his lack of performance in the first 3 T20I matches. The youngster had to perform in the fourth T20I to show that he can be consistent. The Punjab batter did exactly that, with rather class. The Indian team will play the decider of the series in Florida and will be hoping for Gill to come good yet again.
