Rahul Dravid, head coach of the Indian men's cricket team, spoke candidly about such "tough" selection decisions, noting that the greatest thing he can do for a player is, to be honest with them and make the choices without any political agenda or bias.
"You care for each of those people whom you coach, on a personal level as well and you're trying to build personal connections. You want to coach them as people and not so much as cricket players. And when you do that, you want all of them to succeed. But at the same time, you've got to be realistic and realize that not all of them are going to succeed. At times you've got to make those tough and difficult decisions," Dravid told in an episode of 'CRED Curious'.
The current head coach of India also admitted to the fact that every time the Indian team announces their playing XI there are several people who are disappointed. Even other players who don’t make the cut feel sad to have been snubbed. But, that's where the job of a coach comes in, one had to make hard decisions.
The former India batter also said that one definitely feels sad for the ones who are not selected at an emotional level but at least there is a try that best players make the cut. Dravid even said that he accepts that he is not perfect at it but he tries to get it right all the time because a lot of people are affected by this.
The 50-year-old also said that not every player really gets the opportunity to hear the real reason for their absence from the team. Moreover, the former India batter, in the latest interaction with the wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha where he was honest about wanting to give opportunities to younger players in the team.
