After good control over the match in the second innings, India Women ended up losing the second ODI against Australia by a narrow margin of 3 runs. Both teams played the second ODI of the three-match series at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. With this win, Australia have also taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the three-match series.

Batting first, Australia Women posted a total of 258 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the first innings. Opener Phoebe Litchfield played a crucial half-century knock, scoring 63 runs, with 6 fours. She also stitched a partnership of 77 runs for the second wicket with the veteran number 3 batter Ellyse Perry, who also scored 50 runs, with 5 fours and a six.

Star Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma claimed a brilliant five-wicket haul, scalping 5 wickets just at the cost of 38 runs in her 10 overs. Besides Deepti, Pooja Vastrakar, Shreyanka Patil, and Sneh Rana also bagged one wicket each.

Apart from Deepti Sharma’s five-wicket haul, one of the big highlights in the first innings was the concussion injury incident with Indian bowling all-rounder Sneh Rana. She happened to collide with her teammate Pooja Vastrakar in the 25th over of the first innings. Rana was further replaced by Harleen Deol as the former was taken out of the field after she struggled with headaches following the completion of her 10-over quota.

Richa Ghosh’s efforts went in vain as Australia pushed India away from the target

While chasing the target, the hosts India couldn’t get over the line as they could score only 255 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the entire 50 overs. Star wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh played a well-fought knock of 96 runs, alongside the 44-run knock played by Jemmimah Rodrigues; however, their efforts went in vain as India fell 4 runs short of the target and faced the second consecutive defeat in the three-match ODI series.

Annabel Sutherland scalped 3 wickets for Australia, alongside 2 wickets picked by Georgia Wareham. Besides these two, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, and Alana King also bagged one wicket each.
