India Women created history by defeating Australia by a big margin of 8 wickets in the one-off Test match, played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Notably, it is the first-ever win for India Women against Australia Women in Women’s Test cricket history.
Speaking of the match, the visitors’ skipper Alyssa Healy won the toss and decided to bat first; batting first, Australia got bundled out just at the score of 219 runs in the first innings. Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath played the knocks of 40 and 50 runs, respectively. Apart from these two, skipper Alyssa Healy and Kim Garth also contributed with individual scores of 38 and 28 runs, respectively.
Pooja Vastrakar and Sneh Rana bowled brilliantly for India, scalping 4 and 3 wickets, respectively. Other than Vastrakar and Rana, star all-rounder Deepti Sharma also claimed two wickets to bundle out the Aussie girls at 219 in the first innings.
In reply to Australia’s first innings, Indian batters came up with amazing batting performances, including four half-centuries in the batting attack. Deepti Sharma and Smriti Mandhana ended up as the leading run-scorers for India in the first innings, with 78 and 74 runs, respectively.
Besides Mandhana and Sharma, star number four batter Richa Ghosh and middle-order batter Jemmimah Rodrigues also played the crucial knocks of 52 and 73 runs, respectively. On the back of these knocks, India posted 406 runs in the first innings, registering a big lead of 187 runs at the end of the first innings.
India dominate Australia in the second half of the match
Later in the second innings, Indian bowlers shone again and bundled the visitors at the score of 261 runs, including a well-fought knock of 73 runs played by Tahlia McGrath. But Australia could take a lead of only 74 and post a target of only 75 runs for India in the last innings of the match. Sneh Rana shone once again with the ball and claimed 4 wickets for India, alongside 2 wickets each bagged by Rajeshwari Gaikwad and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. Pooja Vastrakar also picked one wicket in the second innings.
While chasing the target, Indian girls comfortably cross the winning line, scoring 75 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 18.4 overs, having Smriti Mandhana and Jemmimah Rodrigues unbeaten at the end with the individual scores of 38 and 12 runs, respectively. Richa Ghosh also contributed with 13 runs in the second innings.
Eventually, Harmanpreet Kaur and co. won the match by 8 wickets to beat Australia for the first time in Women’s Test history.
