Pakistan faced the second consecutive defeat against New Zealand in the five-match T20I series. The Kiwis won by 21 runs in the second T20I at the Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday, January 14 2024. The visiting skipper Shaheen Afridi won the toss and decided to bowl first once again in the series.

Batting first, the opening pair of Finn Allen and wicketkeeper-batter Devon Conway provided a fiery start to New Zealand, adding 59 runs for the first wicket in just 5.1 overs before Conway got dismissed at the individual score of 20 runs.

Later, Finn Allen played a sensational knock of 74 runs off just 41 balls, with 7 fours and 5 sixes. he also added another half-century partnership of 52 runs for the second wicket with the skipper Kane Williamson; the latter was retired hurt after scoring 26 runs off 15 balls with the bat.

On the back of Finn Allen’s blistering half-century, supported by a few small partnerships, New Zealand managed to post a total of 194 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Haris Rauf and Abbas Afridi scalped 3 and 2 wickets, respectively for Pakistan, alongside 1 wicket each picked by Aamer Jamal and Usama Mir.

Pakistan failed to chase after a fighting intent from Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan

While chasing the target, the men in green were in trouble after they lost their both openers just at the team’s score of 10 runs as Saim Ayub and Mohammed Rizwan fell prey to Tim Southee and Adam Milne at the individual scores of 1 and 7 runs, respectively.

But then came a crucial partnership of 87 runs for the third wicket between the former skipper Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman before the latter’s knock ended up off Ben Sears, scoring 50 runs off just 25 balls, with 3 fours and 5 sixes. Besides him, the former skipper and star batter Babar Azam also scored 66 runs off 43 balls, with 7 fours and 2 sixes.

However, these knocks went in vain as Pakistan couldn’t chase down the target and got bundled out at the score of 173 runs in 19.3 overs; eventually, New Zealand won the match by 21 runs and gained a lead of 2-0 in the five-match series.
