In the aftermath of a disheartening defeat to South Africa in the first Test at Centurion, India faces additional woes. The Men in Blue have been penalised for a slow overrate during the match. The Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, suffered an innings and 32-run loss, marking a dismal start to the two-match series against the Proteas.

The visitors displayed resilience in their first inning, posting 245 runs, with KL Rahul showcasing his batting prowess for a century. However, South Africa responded robustly, led by the retiring Dean Elgar's magnificent 185. Contributions from David Bedingham (56) and Marco Jansen (84) propelled the hosts to a commanding first-innings total of 408. India's second innings witnessed a struggle as they were bowled out for 131, with Virat Kohli top-scoring at 76.

The slow overrate during the match has now led to a penalty for the Indian team. Match referee Chris Broad has imposed sanctions on India. He docked them two crucial World Test Championship points and fined them 10% of their match fee. This decision comes from Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, specifically addressing minimum over-rate offences. According to this article, players are fined 5% of their match fee if their team fails to bowl within the stipulated time.

India slips below Australia in the WTC points table.

In the World Test Championship standings, India's position has taken a hit after the penalty. Before the deduction, they were situated at No. 5 with 16 points from three tests and a points percentage of 44.44. However, with the loss of two crucial points due to the slow overrate, India now slips to No. 6, falling below Australia.

Their updated standing reflects 14 points and a points percentage of 38.89, intensifying the challenge for Rohit Sharma's side to secure a spot in the WTC finals. As they gear up for the second Test, India will not only seek redemption on the field but also aim to address these off-field setbacks for a stronger campaign ahead.
